HP on Monday said it had extended the olive branch of compatibility to the Macintosh, via its Windows Home Server The HP MediaSmart Server ex485/ex487 now supports several functions on the Macintosh, including backup and iTunes streaming. The HP MediaSmart Server ex485 with 750 Gbytes of hard disk storage is $599, while the HP MediaSmart Server ex487 with 1.5 terabytes of storage inside it will be priced at $749.

Both can be preordered on Jan. 5 from etailers including Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, Buy.com, Frys.com and Newegg.com, and will be shipped in February, HP said.HP’s MediaSmart line is one of the few, if not the only piece of hardware shipped around Microsoft’s Windows Home Server, which was first shown off in January 2007. The operating system has never been as successful as its other Windows cousins, and suffered from a file corruption bug. Microsoft cut the price of the operating system in November. HP, however, was Microsoft’s launch partner, and its MediaSmart ex470 has received decent reviews.product line.
