| Mac users, you can stop holding your breath. Google announced Monday that Picasa for the Mac, a free desktop application for editing, organizing and sharing digital photos, is now available as a public beta through Google Labs. The application is available as a free download at picasa.google.com/mac/. Mac OS X version 10.4 or later is required, and the release is for Intel-powered Macs only. Google’s Picasa is a popular choice among amateur photographers for managing photos on their computers. It also has a web component. If you have a Google account, you can sync your entire library of photos, or portions of it, to Google’s Picasa website where your photos are hosted for free. There’s also tight integration with Google contacts and other Google services like Blogger. We found the Mac version to be an elegant and easy-to-use alternative to iPhoto, Apple’s own photo app that comes bundled with every new Macintosh.
