According to T-Mobile, the over-the-air update, dubbed 1.1 RC33, which all T-Mobile G1 users should receive within the next two weeks, will add a host of new features and software updates to the open-source touch-screen device. An administrator on T-Mobile’s official online forums said the update will include the Google Voice Search application, an application released on the Apple iPhone 3G last year that gives text-based search results in response to voice requests. The voice-activated search application can also use location-based data to find areas of interest like gas stations, restaurants and coffee shops. The addition of voice-activated search also means G1 users won’t have to slide out the keyboard to enter a search query.
The firmware update has already been pushed out to a small number of users. Along with Google Voice Search, the update also will support a new “Check For Upgrades” feature to check for system updates, the ability to save pictures received as MMS messages and the ability to report offensive comments in the Android Market as spam. The firmware update also fixes several minor bugs, such as Wi-Fi disconnection forcing users out of instant messaging sessions and failing calendar reminders.
